Antibiotic therapy
| Pharmacological Properties: |

| Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum aminopenicillin, structurally related to ampicillin. Stable in acidic media and it is completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, not being affected by the presence of food. |
| Indications: |
| Acute and chronic bronchitis; acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis; sinusitis; otitis media; urinary infection; shigellosis; meningitis; septicemia. AMOVAL 1g is also indicated in patients on acid suppression therapy (with omeprazole) and when it is combined with another antibiotic (claritromicine) to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (triple therapy). |
| Dosage and Administration: |
| Respiratory infections, recommended dosage: Adults: one 500 or 750mg tablet three times daily or 1 g every 12 hours. Children: 20 to 40mg/kg/day divided in three doses (1⁄2 to 1 tea spoon 250 or 500mg suspension based on weight, every 8 hours). In drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae 80 - 90mg/Kg/day divided in two or three doses (every 8 to 12 hours). Usual dosage to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. 1g every 12 hours under triple therapy with omeprazole and claritromicine for 7 days. |
| Contraindications: |
| Hypersensitivity to penicillin and its derivatives. |
| Precautions and Warnings: |
| Allergic reactions to penicillins should be ruled out before administering AMOVAL. Renal function should be assessed periodically in patients with renal impairment on long term treatments. |
| Adverse Reactions: |
| Allergic reactions characterized by cutaneous rash, oral lesions and anaphylactic shock, the most severe form of allergic reaction, may occur |
| Interactions: |
| Interaction with allopurinol has been reported. |
| On-dosages: |
| Besides the aforementioned side effects, no toxic effect caused by amoxicillin overdose has been reported. |
| Storage: |
| Store below 30°C, away form light and moist. |
